The blog author is Zack M. Paakkonen, attorney at Portland Legal LLC in Portland, Maine. The firm handles a variety of legal issues for all clients, including family law, bankruptcy, estate planning and probate, criminal defense, general civil litigation, civil rights or discrimination cases, and a variety of other matters related to the LGBTQIA community. Before resuming private practice at Portland Legal, Zack was an attorney at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), where he successfully advocated for civil rights before courts, legislatures, and governmental agencies in impact litigation and policy advocacy throughout New England. Before working at GLAD, Zack co-founded and worked at West End Legal, LLC in Portland. Zack is a rostered Guardian ad Litem for both family law and child protective cases.
Zack has contributed a chapter on legal protections for transgender youth to Transgender Family Law: A Guide to Effective Advocacy, published in 2012. He is a member of the National LGBT Bar Association and its Family Law Institute, where he serves on the Executive Committee. He also serves as a Board Advisor to the Trans Youth Equality Foundation and sits on the board of Equality Maine. Zack has presented at local, regional, and national conferences for the LGBTQIA community and for professionals serving that community on legal topics.
